My work is a story of the uncontrolled free will of mixed and melted ceramic materials in the kiln. Whenever I travel, I try to minimalize my plans. The extra margin of time freed up by such minimal planning is accompanied by unexpected serendipitous opportunities, maximizing my free will. When I form something out of clay, the starting point is the moist sticky clay material; at the same time, an embodiment of the form I want to make already exists in my head. At that point, all the fun or interest is utterly lost. I can't fully control my working process; nor do i wish to do so. So, as with my spontaneous travel, I want to give the clay a free will of its own. During the kiln-firing process, the material meets material. In the kiln, they become agglomerated or shatter and break; they go through a process of bonding, albeit imperfect. This imperfection becomes a more honest formative language in modern times, destroying the form of squares given by the artist and forming forms, colors, and textures on their own. Such form signifies the free will that the materials have gained by itself in the fire, going beyond the artist’s will.
